Automatic Transmission Toyota Supra Spotted

More spy shots have surfaced but this time the Toyota Supra is alone. We get a much better look at the interior with close ups and behold the automatic transmission. The shifter is from BMW and not only that, but we see the BMW iDrive infotainment system as well. On the steering wheel we can see the Toyota emblem imprint that's covered with a piece of tape so that's a pretty dead giveaway that this is in fact the Supra.

I'm pretty disappointed to see an automatic, but that doesn't mean for certain that the Supra will be strictly automatic. The Z4 (commonly referred to as Z5) has been spotted with a manual gearbox so there's still some hope.

If the Z was spotted with a manual transmission, we should see a Supra with a manual transmission option. Especially if it's already using a BMW transmission, it shouldn't be hard for them to just swap it over. I'm pretty sure they aren't just going to come with one transmission option, just wouldn't make sense.

I have been long awaiting this..

If this is the sort of "automatic" I think it is then we'll be in for a real treat. The best way Toyota can go about this is either offering BMW's SMG transmission or their own transmission that's SMG-like.

MKV Supra comes during a time where manuals are heading out, this is a pivotal point.

SMG-Like is something I would want as I do recall hearing a bunch of issues surrounding that whole SMG transmissions they've had from the E46 generation.

Having driven a 650 with the SMG... it's definitely different. The vehicle legit rolls back just like a manual vehicle would, when you flip up and down the shifter, it feels and shifts like a manual, it's as close as you can get without having a clutch pedal.

I have been long awaiting this..

We can take the ZF 8-Speed as a hint of what to expect, not that we'll get this exact transmission but its a slight representation of what Lexus/Toyota wants to accomplish:

Quote:
Moving from Weakness to Strength

In the process of creating a maximum performance car, Lexus has done nothing less than turn what is typically thought to be a weakness into a solid advantage. To illustrate the point, let’s get right to the qualities that make it so:

· The among the world’s fastest shift time for street legal production cars. At 0.1 second, it’s faster than you.

· Full manual shift control that can be instantly accessed by moving the console-mounted shift lever to “M” and then using either the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters or the shift lever. In manual mode, it shifts only when you tell it to.

· A direct feel unrivaled by conventional automatics, made possible via clutch lockup (yes, like a manual) employed in second through eighth gears

· Ultra-quick throttle blipping downshifts match engine and gear speed to avoid sudden engine braking—an advantage during performance driving, on the track or on the road

· First gear torque multiplication for maximum off-the-line acceleration

· Smooth, yet quick and drama free automatic shifting, if that is what you desire
