Toyota Supra May Be Joined By MR2 Successor

Back in the ‘90s, Toyota had a trio of sports cars dubbed ‘The Three Brothers' and the original lineup included the Supra, Celica, and the mid-engined MR2.

We already know that the Japanese automaker is bringing back the Supra and the outgoing GT86 is filling the Celica void. Now we have news of Toyota’s plans to produce a lightweight, fast, mid-engined sports car that embodies the MR2 roadster spirit.

“We hope to have the three brothers in place as soon as possible”, said Toyota engineer and Gazoo Racing chief Tetsuya Tada in an interview with Evo at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. He goes on to say that the automaker wants to have the trio in production together once again.

Maybe the new MR2 will feature hybrid technology originally developed for Toyota LMP1 racecars as the amount of environmental and noise regulations are on the rise. In which case the MR2 should retain its mid-engine layout as a nod to its predecessor and for ease of battery storage.

To this, we say ‘it’s about time’ and Tada agrees as he too is not a fan of Toyota’s current lineup even if those bread and butter models drove Toyota to the top of the global car manufacturing charts.

Heard the MR2 will be the car to rival the Miata. We thought the 86 was for that but the MR2 can be the roadster to get the job done properly and have adequate power.
