A Family of Sports Cars?

Back in June news broke that Toyota had trademarked the S-FR moniker. Nobody knew what they we're up to. Now we do. S-FR stands for Small, Front-Engine, Rear-Drive. I'll give you a minute to do your pants back up...

Toyota says the S-FR has been deisgned to boost the company's performance credibility, best part is, the compact is expected to head to production as an entry-level sports coupe. Considering the success Honda has had with the S660 roadster in Japan, it's a smart move.

DailyKanban says the S-FR is about the same size as a Toyota Vitz (Yaris) and Car and Driver says it's 2160 lb body is motivated by a 1.5L natural 4 cylinder making some 130 hp.

In terms of size it is 3 inches longer then a Miata and 10 inches shorter then the 86 and narrower then both.

The S-FR is expected to go into production in late 2016, with sales starting in early 2017 and it will most definitely be part of Toyotas new sports car family, including the second-gen 86 and the sometime or other BMW Supra FT-1.

Only problem is, Honda is having trouble justifying the S660 roadster for American roads could Toyota find themselves with a similar evaluation?

I feel the S-FR could really benefit from having a convertible top. That would make a fun little sporty car.

It just can't be something with arms and a motor, it's going to cost too much and they need areas to cut cost, so having a roof you have to remove manually is what i'd like to see.
