Both Toyota Supra And BMW Z4 To Be Built In Austria

Remember those rumors from last year, of the Supra FT1 being built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria? It seems like we may have confirmation from one of Automotive News’ insider sources.

Magna International kept silent on the matter and only stated that “no announcement has been made by BMW or Toyota and we are therefore unable to comment." But sources say the contract manufacturer was picked to produce both the BMW Z4 and the Toyota Supra in their facilities. The company is already rolling the G-Class, 5 Series, and E-Pace off its assembly line with the new I-Pace to follow soon.

Considering how the two models were jointly developed using the same architecture, it just makes logistical sense to produce them in the same plant when some components are shared between the two vehicles. But don’t let chief engineer Tetsuya Tada hear you say that as he’s made it abundantly clear at the Geneva Motor Show that they’re two completely different cars.

Toyota should reveal the road going Supra as a halo model, something to make their brand more emotionally appealing. Its arrival is slated for the first half of 2019. The production ready Z4 is expected to be revealed later this year as well.

So long as the contract facility keeps a very close eye on the production line and quality control, I couldn't care less if both the Supra and Z4 are produced in Austria. The bigger concern would be the rate of production because the plant is already producing so many models for the global market.

Toyota and BMW has a lot to lose if it doesn't turn out good and its probably why they contracted the work to a more focused environment. Its what Ford did with the new GT and seems to have worked well for them.

As long as they can keep up with production demands, than it shouldn't really matter where the car is manufactured. Really goes to show how much their platform has in common if they are being manufactured in the same plant. Don't expect quality control to be an issue on a BMW or Toyota product.
